Crushed German Glass Inlay: Colour Within the Wood

German glass is famous for its clarity and colour depth. The fragments we use in our rings come from small-bowl glassware made in Germany, crushed into pieces ranging from fine sand to small pebbles. Each fragment is translucent, which means light passes through it, reflects off the wood beneath, and comes back out -- creating a shimmer that solid metal cannot replicate.

The glass is sandwiched between wood veneers during the bentwood construction process. It sits beneath the waterproof coating, so it is fully sealed and protected. The marine-grade polyurethane fills the gaps between glass fragments, creating a smooth, glass-like surface that feels polished under your fingertip.

Popular glass colours include cobalt blue, deep amber, and forest green. Cobalt blue over grey-dyed birdseye maple is particularly striking, creating a ring that looks like ocean water moving over dark rock. Amber over Santos Rosewood creates a warm, sunset-like effect that shifts throughout the day as light changes.

Glass inlay works best on offset designs, where the colour is concentrated on one side of the ring. This creates a more dynamic look and ensures the colour catches light naturally as you move your hand.

German glass inlay is one of our most unusual ring features, and it is the one that generates the most questions from people who see it. If you want a custom wood ring that is genuinely unique, glass inlay is the way to go.
